I was sent a bottle of Colina Colada and opened it up to try with friends. It was a bit more sweet than the drinks I normally prefer but, it went down smoothly and felt like something you drink during the holidays. Colina Colada is a cream liqueur that is 14.5% alcohol by volume (ABV).
According to their website, the liqueur as the distinct flavors of cinnamon, lemon, rice, sugar and vanilla. Colina Colada is made with Caribbean rum, fresh dairy cream and horchata spices. It can be enjoyed either alone over ice or poured into your favorite cocktails and mixed shots.
On Colina Colada’s website, you can find the recipes to the Colina Apple Mango Dream, Colina Batida Classic and Colina Cola. The Colina Colada was created by Don Colina, in honor of his new bride, to serve to their wedding guests.
Today, Carlos Morfa, Don’s son, uses his father’s centuries old family recipe to carry on the Colina Colada tradition. The spirit is produced through Rhino Global Enterprises in Miami Lakes, Florida and hand-bottled by Don Colina Distillers in Riviera Beach, Florida.
At the 15th Annual Critics Challenge International Wine and Spirits Competition, the Colina Colada received the Silver Award in the Spirits Category. The competition was held on May 26th and May 27th, 2018 in San Diego, California.
On August 8, 2018, Christopher Null reviewed the Colina Colada. Null is the founder and the editor-in-chief of Drinkhacker, as well as an award-winning winemaker. Drinkhacker, founded in 2007, is a blog that covers everything beer, cocktails and wine.
Christopher Null gave it a rating of an A- and stated that the horchata-inspired liqueur has a “nose is full of cinnamon and gingersnap cookie notes, while the sweet and creamy palate evokes banana cream pie.
Touched with lemon here and there, it builds to a boldly cinnamon-flavored body, reminiscent of rice pudding. As expected, the finish remains sweet and creamy, without becoming cloying, hanging on to the cinnamon for the duration — just as it should.”
Colina Colada was reviewed by Tastings on August 16, 2018; powered by the Beverage Testing Institute, Tastings was founded in 1981. Since that time, Tastings has published more than 100,000 reviews on beers, spirits and wines.
Tastings panel of experts gave the Colina Colada a score of 92 points out of 100, placing it in the Exceptional (Gold Medal) Category. The panel stated that it featured, “Creamy opaque cream color.
Aromas of flaky pie crusts, vanilla candle, condensed milk, horchata, and almond milk with a creamy, bright, sweet full body and an effortless, appealing, medium-long cafe au lait, yogurt covered nuts, and Christmas cookies finish. An effortlessly drinkable, totally tasty horchata liqueur with crave-able creamy character.”
