Mitchell Lake Audubon Center
On November 18th, I hosted my 2nd Instameet at Mitchell Lake Audubon Center. What’s an Instameet? It’s a group of Instagrammers meeting up to take photos and videos together. That’s it!
(An InstaMeet can happen anywhere and be any size. They’re a great opportunity to share tips and tricks with other community members in your area, and an excuse to get out and explore someplace new!)
Other nature lovers, bloggers, photographers, and locals joined in on a nature walk and drive with me at the Southside wetlands. Be sure to search for the tag #MitchellLakeSA or #MitchellLakeAudubonCenter on Instagram to check out images.
Fin Addict Foundation joined us and shared their mission with the those who attended, and Southside Craft Soda kept us all hydrated with their delicious honey infused soda. “Mamarazzii” owner of Lillyana Carpio Photography also joined in on the fun and used her professional photography skills to take pictures of the wetlands. All 3 founders/business owners are from the Southside community.
From its inception in 2004 Mitchell Lake Audubon Center has been welcoming visitors to its sanctuaries and inviting them to participate in nature education programs. This innovative approach—preserving open space not just to protect wildlife and native habitat from people, but to actively engage people in its conservation through learning and exploration—served as a model for Audubon and other nature education centers nationwide and influenced the development of place-based experiential learning as a highly effective pedagogical practice.
Located just 15 minutes from downtown San Antonio, you will think you entered a different world. Dedicated to connecting people to nature through birds and their habitats, Mitchell Lake offers a variety of programming- something for everyone in the family.
Mitchell Lake strives to be the go-to place in San Antonio for outdoor, STEM-based education. In addition to getting kids outdoors to learn about science hands-on, we hold native plant workshops for your garden or porch, birding tours for the novice or experienced birder, and even a day-long Hoot & Harvest Festival for the entire family.
The goal is that you come take a breath of fresh air and enjoy your time at Mitchell Lake Audubon Center. Learn a little, play a little, and breathe a little fresher air. Time in nature has been shown to lower stress levels. So, come on by, relax, and watch the birds. The Mitchell Lake Audubon Center is located at 10750 Pleasanton Rd, San Antonio, TX 78221. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 8am-4pm. Phone:(210) 628-1639
